Waterloo Region International Plowing Match 1995 and 2012 Fund supports programs for individuals with “special needs” at Countryside Camp and Conference Centre

We are so please to recognize the Waterloo Region International Plowing Match 1995 and 2012 Fund held at the Waterloo Region Community Foundation for their support of the “special needs” programs at Countryside Camp and Conference Centre this summer. This funding will be used to purchase the necessary medical supplies to stock our Health Unit building for the summer as we serve nearly 250 adults with ‘special needs’ in 14 overnight programs this season.

We want to thank those on the granting committee of the Waterloo Region International Plowing Match 1995 and 2012 Fund for their favourable review of our grant application this year.

Homecoming 2022

Homecoming 2022: September 17, 2022
Celebrating the 45th Annual Fun Fair at Countryside Camp!

What comes to your mind when you hear “homecoming”?

For me it’s all about the coming of autumn: raking fallen leaves, fresh apple pie, cider, and wood smoke from the campfire. Those orange and red maple leaf colours in Algonquin, the foggy mist off the lake in the early morning, and the sound of the geese getting ready to head south.

For sports fans it might be the World Series, the Grey Cup, the NHL, or any number of NCAA or NFL football games each weekend.

But for those who are diehard “Camp Shalom” supporters, it’s the Annual Fun Fair hosted at camp the third Saturday every year—this year in person on September 17.

The Fall Fair, as it was called until the year 2000, was changed to Fun Fair as not to compete with the marketing of the Cambridge and Paris Fall Fairs. It was started here in 1977 by Mrs. Joan Drost, the wife of the first director of Camp Shalom, Rev. John Drost. The first fair was a great success—it rained, it poured, and Joan slipped down the hill to the cabins on her backside, making for even more fun as the day’s weather never dampened the joyful spirit of those early Camp Shalom pioneers. They saw hundreds of friends from across southern Ontario show up and offer their encouragement and support for a ministry still in its early stages of development, and $10,000 was raised to continue this ministry.

This year we continue Joan’s vision, and are excited to be returning in person here at the camp to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the fair.

Join us in celebrating Homecoming 2022 at Countryside Camp. Bring your entire family and enjoy the traditional Dutch and Canadian foods, as well as the rides, games, garage sale, auctions, and tearoom treats. Most of all, make this year’s fair a destination and an opportunity to reunite with friends you have not seen in years.

If you hear a guy speaking from the gazebo and calling out folks he hasn’t seen since 2019, it will be me. Come up and say hello!

New Enhancements to Our Programs

logo-cambridge-foundation (1)We would like to thank our friends at the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation for financially supporting the purchase of three-wheeled bicycles for our special needs programs. Thank you!!! We already have 15 two-wheeled bicycles that we use in our Spec Trek and Spec Sports programs but some of our campers who have special needs have trouble riding the two-wheeled bicycles. The addition of these three-wheeled bicycles will open the opportunity to enjoy bike rides to as many campers as possible. We can’t wait until the best summer ever next year!

Out With The Old & In With The New!

Hello everyone, Momma Jo here!

This January brings with it a new year and a new decade!

Every New Year, I always feel an immense opportunity to reflect and move forward in a lot of areas of life –– both personally and professionally.

I’ve even felt the pull of the New Year at Countryside Camp. Where to begin?

I must admit that my favourite way to greet the new year is to try out new recipes and revamp our menu!

We take the time to choose our favourite menu items for both retreat groups and summer camp very carefully. Hashbrown casserole or chicken souvlaki, anyone? My family and colleagues always serve as the Quality Control Team –– taste-testing new recipes and helping us move forward with menu additions.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be looking at our expanding list of plant-based menu options made from scratch and with love. We’ll also have meal and treats options for our friends with food allergies to gluten, dairy, and eggs.

I truly love being able to meet the dietary needs of everyone who shares a table here at Countryside Camp!

Cheers to the New Year and to what’s coming to our plates!
