Navigating the Fog!

During the mid-1970s I served in the United States Navy where I participated in training at Great Lakes, Illinois; Cape May, New Jersey; and Newport, Rhode Island. One key area of training was navigation. Navigation is a field of study that focuses on the process of monitoring and controlling the movement of a craft or vessel from one place to another. There are many factors that influence your course in reaching your destination safely.  It wasn’t until my time in Newport, Rhode Island, that I experienced FOG. Thick fog was not uncommon in Narragansett Bay and visibility was, at times, only inches. The horns would blow, and the bells would sound, and then everything STOPPED. Navigation on land and sea was nearly impossible, and the base on which I was stationed was ordered to lock down.

Our adversary was not the lock down, but the fog; and as we applied our training and experience in navigation, we were able to, with patience, reach our destination safely.

Navigating through this past year of Covid-19 reminds me a lot of my time navigating in the fog at Narragansett Bay.

Our Journey

At Countryside Camp and Conference Centre, God’s wisdom, guidance, and provision have sustained His ministry. In May 2020, the Province of Ontario closed all residential summer programs, including ours. Our rental ministry was also forced to close, but thankfully, nearly all of our rental ministry groups have rolled over their events to 2021.

During this time of disruptive innovation, we developed new ways to use the internet to communicate our mission, purpose, and current position to our stakeholders, guests, campers, and friends. Power-n-Praise sessions happened online and our 43rd Annual Fun Fair became a week-long event online instead of just a one-day event in September. In our eyes and in Google Analytics, both proved to be very successful.

In September, we developed a Covid-19 reopening plan for rental ministry with reduced building capacities, enhanced cleaning and sanitizing, and social distancing. Upon implementing the new Covid-19 reopening plan, two day groups (45 and 90) took advantage of the opportunity, and both were successful. When the province moved our region into the orange zone, then red zone, daily group opportunities were again suspended, but our plan had been tested without incident.

As we continue to experience the pandemic of Covid-19, we remain vigilant and prepared, awaiting the next opportunity to apply our reopening plan not only to rental ministry groups, but also to individuals looking to experience “The Best Summer Ever at Camp Shalom-2021”, our residential summer program.

Our Future

We still provide the largest residential summer camp program facility in Ontario to individuals with special needs, hosting over 210 guests in nineteen Special Needs, Spec Trek, Spec Arts, and Spec Sports program sessions over eight weeks of the summer. Add to that the more than 240 students participating in the twelve Adventure, Munchkin, Quest, and Discipleship programs, and we will serve over 420 residential guests and campers. We are also launching a new day camp program for the 2021 season. The reduced capacity of residential campers and guests reflects the implementation of the Covid-19 reopening plan.

As we prepare to reopen, we need your help in three important ways:

  • Be PRAYING for God’s ministry here at Camp Shalom! Pray for the staff to have resilience and strength, soundness of mind, and clarity in their call. Pray that God will continue to show His favour and abundance so that we have more and greater opportunities to serve others here at camp this month and every month throughout 2021. Pray for Camp Shalom and the positive impact that the seasonal staff will have on the lives of children, youth, and guests with special needs that need to know the love of Jesus Christ.
  • Be PRESENT here at Camp Shalom! This coming month as we prepare to reopen, we are hosting a Spring Work Day event. Yes, this will be an event! If you are able, we need help cleaning up outdoors from the winter and the inside of our buildings as they have been unused for an entire year. Save the date: MAY 1st, 2021! Watch your inboxes for more notifications!
  • Be PROVIDING financially for this reopening season at Camp Shalom! I have appreciated your support of our ministry through this last year and hope that it will continue into the 2021 season. A number of you have chosen to support us monthly, and that has helped tremendously during the lean months of this pandemic.

Thank you in advance for your help in these three needed areas!

More Family Experiences with a Focus on Fun!

Yes, Holidays this summer are definitely different and spending quality time with family has taken on a whole new meaning.  With the exciting on-site programs of “Camp Shalom” closed for the summer, we are developing experiences for you and your family to enjoy while staying connected to the ministry and safe observing ‘social distancing’ were necessary. Some of these experiences are open all season long and others have specific beginning and ending dates. Each of these experiences are user friendly and self-guided.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario!
If you love the outdoors and wine and peaches and cherries and you name it, then this is an event and area you will want to see again and again. For years, I have wanted to develop a walk-n-roll event specifically for this area along the Niagara River trail system. My wife, Sharon, and I have spent the day many times just wondering the streets enjoying the older homes, eating at the Stage Coach restaurant, and viewing the beautiful Niagara River at Niagara-on-the Lake. Don’t forget the Shaw Festival for the theatre fans, or the clock tower from all those Hallmark Christmas movies. The small town feel of the downtown with the Irish shop, Christmas store, and the landmark Prince of Wales Hotel enjoyed with a Carriage ride through the streets will serve as your own European escape. Even if it is just for a day and the thoughts of pre-Covid-19 days dance in your head. As I mentioned, this is one of my personal recharging locations and I hope you enjoy the experience.

Niagara-on-the-Lake Walk-n-Roll!

If you are looking for a beautiful paved trail for a ride, run, or walk; this 9.5K trek along the scenic Niagara River is one your entire family will enjoy. Your can choose your starting point: Fort George or the Waterfront Trailhead, and the journey ends at the RiverBrink Art Museum parking lot.

If you start at Fort George, you will find paid parking, washrooms, picnic tables, and a Zoom Bikeshare. At 1 kms traveling SE you will reach the Waterfront Trailhead, offering free parking and picnic tables.

At 2.2 kms you will discover the historic McFarland House with washrooms (the last on this trail) and a picnic area, where you can enjoy a family lunch or snack.

Trek another 7 kms and your course is finished, at the RiverBrink Art Museum.  For those a bit more adventurous, try round-trip and journey nearly 20 kms.

You can participate in this event individually and/or obtain pledges from friends and family; together supporting the ministry of Countryside Camp and Conference Centre.  Thank you for supporting this ministry and I hope you enjoy this event and beautiful Niagrara-on-the-Lake.

Countryside Camp Car Rally Scavenger Hunt!

Family Experiences with a Focus on Fun!

Holidays this summer are definitely different, and spending quality time with family has taken on a whole new meaning.  With the exciting on-site programs of “Camp Shalom” closed for the summer, we are developing experiences for you and your family to enjoy while staying connected to the ministry and safely observing “social distancing” as necessary. Some of these experiences are open all season long, and others have specific beginning and ending dates. Each experience is user-friendly and self-guided.

Countryside Camp Car Rally Scavenger Hunt!
Are you looking for an opportunity to get out of your house and enjoy seeing God’s splendor in the scenic areas surrounding “Camp Shalom”?  As our area has started to open to localized patio dining, take-out, and tourism, this car rally offers you and your family two options: a 45 minute or a 90 minute tour and scavenger hunt. The Car Rally is not a race, and it is our hope that you would take your time and enjoy the journey along the way: stop for a golf-ball-sized ice cream cone at our staff’s favourite spot, Pinehurst Variety; pick your own strawberries; bring your fishing rod and stop along one of the many river crossings on the trip; plan a stop for picnic lunch; or even have dinner on the patio of a restaurant in Paris. This is your day, with your family, supporting one of your favourite ministries.

To register for the Car Rally, click here. Once we receive your completed registration, you will be sent the Car Rally Scavenger Hunt Clues and Instructions. When you finish your rally, just scan your answers and email them back to tim@countrysidecamp.com and your name will be entered into a draw on Labour Day for a 500 ml bottle of pure maple syrup.

New Enhancements to Our Programs

logo-cambridge-foundation (1)We would like to thank our friends at the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation for financially supporting the purchase of three-wheeled bicycles for our special needs programs. Thank you!!! We already have 15 two-wheeled bicycles that we use in our Spec Trek and Spec Sports programs but some of our campers who have special needs have trouble riding the two-wheeled bicycles. The addition of these three-wheeled bicycles will open the opportunity to enjoy bike rides to as many campers as possible. We can’t wait until the best summer ever next year!

Stand in the Gap – 2020 How does it work?

Stand in the GapStand in the Gap is not just a camp sponsorship program that “enables” people to attend camp for a reduced fee; it is a process that sees poverty as the result of relationships that do not work, that are not just, that are not for life, that are not harmonious or enjoyable. Poverty is the absence of shalom in all its meaning. Poverty exists where one or more of the four foundational relationships for each person are broken: a relationship with God, with self, with others, and with the rest of creation.

Jesus stated in scripture, Mark 14:7 “For you will always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them.” Our goal moving forward with SITG is to define “good” as the process of ongoing change that moves a little boy or girl, a teen, or an individual with ‘special needs’ closer to being in a right relationship with God, self, others, and creation.

We are charging $150 for each session and a $50 administration fee for a total of: $200:

  • to cover the additional food service related expenses,
  • to cover a portion of the Managing Director’s time and office staff in handling and processing the funding for these registrations.

Stand in the Gap will be promoted within selective social service agencies; non-profit charitable organizations, service clubs, (Christian centered) business groups and churches throughout portions of Southern Ontario that have the capacity to determine need within their community.  These organizations will also serve as the means for effective follow up throughout the year. Since initiated in 2010, 869 children, youth, or individuals with “Special Needs” have been able to participate in the Stand in the Gap program here at Countryside Camp and Conference Centre.

The goal for Stand in the Gap is to provide up to 70 children and individuals with “Special Needs”, meeting the eligibility requirements, with an exciting Christ-centered summer camping experience this summer for the first time.

Here are the steps for your church to follow in sponsoring a Stand in the Gap camper:

  1. Call Tim @ 888-226-7722 or email Tim (tim@countrysidecamp.com) to check availability and notify him that you want to send a camper.
  2. Your church would identify the individual or individuals within your community that are at risk and financially unable to attend “Camp Shalom” and may have attended camp in the last season. We want to bless many children with the opportunity to experience our programs. It will be your call if you feel a camper from a previous year should attend.
  3. Register Online for SITG

I will give you an agreed upon number of uniquely different single use discount   codes only activated for specific session weeks of summer camp and you distribute them to identified camper parents or caregivers; the parent/guardian will register their child on-line at countrysidecamp.com using this single use discount code. The church will be billed monthly for $200 per camper registered. For a step by step on how to register online, see below.

  1. Follow-up with the family to see if they need a ride to camp
  2. Follow-up with the family to see if they need a ride home from camp
  3. Follow-up with the family to connect them with your church family.
  4. There is a reporting requirement. All organizations are required to submit a summers-end report to the camp. This report will highlight two areas: the journey of the campers identified and sponsored, stating the impact our program has had in their relationships with God, self, others, and creation; and how this program has affected the individual’s involvement and relationship with your organization.

Stand in the Gap spaces and (online registration codes) will be assigned for specific program sessions of the summer, this will assist us in maintaining the proper staffing ratios.

The Camp is unable to accept partial SITG payments from participants. Only payments in full ($200) made by sponsoring churches or organizations will be accepted for sponsoring participants. Added donations from sponsoring churches and organization are greatly appreciated as we strive to raise the $45,000 needed to cover the gap between actual costs and this reduced fee.

Set by Step to Register Online.

  1. You will have received an agreed upon number of unique discount codes that can be used once for one camper.
  2. After you have identified a child/family you would like to sponsor, give that child’s parent/guardian one discount code for each child.
  3. The child’s parent/guardian must then go to countrysidecamp.com and click on the Register Now button. (Please note that the child’s parent/guardian must register the camper not the organization).
  4. The parent/guardian must then create an account using their email address. We recognize that some lower income families may not have a computer, you may need to help them by allowing them to use a computer at your organization or at the library.
  5. The system will ask you for your family and child’s information.
  6. When you get the “Session Selection” page you must enter your discount code. The discount code will cause the balance on the right hand side to show up as $0.00. T-shirts may be purchased for $15. T-shirts must be paid for by credit card during the online registration process. Churches will not be billed for t-shirts.
  7. If the family has more than one child there will be a tab near the top for each child. Each discount code is only good for one child. You will have to enter one discount code for each child.
  8. The next page will be some more forms to fill out.
  9. The payment page will not collect payment because the balance should be $0.00.
  10. After you submit your registration a confirmation email will be emailed to the email address you used to setup the account. If you do not see the confirmation email it might be in your junk mail folder.
  11. After we receive the registration we will invoice your organization approximately monthly for $200 per camper. We will include the names of each camper that has registered.

Camp Shalom – A Dinner to Remember and Celebrate 50 years of God’s Faithfulness

What a celebration of God’s faithfulness to his ministry at “Camp Shalom.”  On May 25th, 2019, First Reformed Church of St. Catharines, hosted our 50th Anniversary banquet serving more than eighty guests to an evening of faith, fun and fellowship.  I had the privilege of serving as the Master of Ceremony and enjoyed engaging with many guests from many different deciades of service at Camp Shalom.

The venue was beautifully decorated by Karen Detmar, her mother, Anne Detmar and Jenn Forneri. The details as you will notice in the album are typical of all of Karen’s events. From the stage curtain to the photo walls to the fantastic meal, all the details were wonderfully addressed.

The evening began with worship from Ethan Partridge followed by a buffet banquet; prepared by Nicole Baraka (Hogeveen) and her team from Toronto. Nicole is a former camper and seasonal staff alumni. Connecting the theme throughout our evening with worship were two very special guests, Klaas and Anne Detmar, from the “Group of Seven”. They reminded us through song that the generation that founded the camp is still vibrant and engaged in our ministry today. William (Bill) Lensink took command of the evening with a power testimony of the early founding of “Camp Shalom.”  I have never seen him more excited given the opportunity to share first hand from his experience in the early years of Camp Shalom.

For me to see so many different decades of stakeholders represented from 50 years of faithful ministry across South Ontario was very moving. And then, having the privilege and honour to introduce my friend and co-worker, Calvin VerMulm really made it a special night. Calvin’s interactive presentation inviting four seasonal staff forward to share their experience while serving really touched the hearts of all those in attendance. Sharing from his time as Program Director and Classis Youth Director, Calvin’s connection provided a strong foundation for the programs and curriculum we develop and use at Camp Shalom today.

Near the conclusion of the evening, I was asked to give opportunity to all those in attendance to participate in a special offering for the new roof needed for Centre Hall. The Raise the Roof campaign is specifically for the funding that project and is open to anyone that would like to participate by using this link:    https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/countryside-camp-and-conference-centre-association/campaign/raise-the-roof/

I was also asked to share about the vision God has placed on my heart for the future. Over the last six months God has placed a new vision for this ministry on my heart: Countryside Lodge, a new single story accessible building with accommodations for 60-80, a worship centre for 240, a beautiful lobby, meeting rooms and activity centre. The Lodge would replace the non-accessible bedrooms in the basement of Centre Hall and we would then use Centre Hall as our main Dining Room for the entire complex. This is a big dream but one I feel so strongly about and ask you to join with me in praying for the direction and development of such an amazing vision to become reality over the next 3 years.

I did not want the evening to end, the joy in celebration and worship that we all experienced that evening has provided the spark we all needed to ignite the flame to burn brightly for the next 50 years of God’s ministry at Camp Shalom!

Thank you Calvin VerMulm and Jane and Abigail for coming from South Dakota; to Ethan Partridge, Klaas and Anne Detmar for leading well in worship; the Bill Lensink for his testimony; to Nicole Baraka and her team from Toronto for a wonderful meal; and all those who came out to celebrate God’s faithfulness. A special thank you is in order to Karen Detmar, Anne Detmar, Jenn Forneri, Sharon Partridge and the members of the board recruited for assisting with much of the design and development of this momentous event. You did amazing work for His Honour and Glory!

Get Hooked!

Hello there!
I’m Amanda, I was involved in Camp Shalom for six years.

Camp Shalom came into my life at a very integral point. I had grown up in a Christian home and attended a Christian elementary school; up to that point I had not really had my faith tested. However, at the end of that summer I was going to a public high school. It was during that summer that I attended Quest and truly experienced heartfelt worship, the remorse of my sin, and freedom in Christ.

After that summer I was hooked on Jesus and even sported my Camp Shalom shirt on my first day of high school. I spent the next six summers at Camp Shalom attending the leadership program, working in the kitchen, being a counselor, and serving as Adventure Camp Coordinator.

To this day I open my Bible and see past theme verses and it makes me daydream of those sunny summer days all over again. The foundation of my faith came from my time and friendships built at Camp Shalom. I will forever be thankful for the energy and resources from all the staff and volunteers that allowed me to have that life changing experience.

I also pray for continuation of those silly fun counselors, revival nights, and polar bear dips, so that another young kid who is unsure of what the future might bring can get hooked on Jesus Christ like I did.

Amanda van Leeuwen (Voorberg)

As an aside, I wanted to tell you about a time at Camp Shalom when Amanda was the Adventure Camp Coordinator. She had been telling me each week of days that were designated as funny shirt day, or hat day, or something day and I missed everyone. So during one of the last weeks of camp, she told me on Monday that Thursday was PJ day and that all the staff were to wear their PJs to breakfast.  Yes, you know what happened, Thursday came and I remembered. I drove over to camp and passed staff who were not wearing PJs but said, “I am getting mine on now, I will see you at breakfast.”

I walked into the dining hall and I was the only one wearing PJs. She got me and we still laugh about it today.
